The College started as a School of Health Technology in 1977 with the sole aim of training middle man power cadre health personnel for the implementation of Primary Health Care Policies in the rural areas. It was then situated at ECWA Evangel Hospital in Jos, now known as Bingham University Teaching Hospital, Jos.
The College moved to its permanent site in Zawan, in October 1987 with its first Principal as Dr. Hanna, an Egyptian. At that time, the College had few students enrolled into courses such as Public Health, Community Health and Medical Laboratory Sciences.

In 1990, Mrs. Hannatu Garba took over from late Mr. Saleh as the Principal of the School and was able to improve on the admission number of students by the introduction of new courses such as Assistant Health Record Officers and Pharmacy Technician programs.
Mr. Peter Uchu also took over as Principal in 1996 and handed over the mantle of leadership to Mrs. Mercy Kyesduhun in 2001. The Plateau State Ministry of Health and staff of the School worked tirelessly towards upgrading the School to a College status, so as to make the accreditation of courses by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) a reality for the award of National and Higher National Diplomas.
The School was upgraded to a College in 2003, via Plateau State of Nigeria Gazette No 2 Vol. 10 (College of Health Technology Law, 2003), by the then Governor of Plateau State, Chief Joshua C. Dariye with Mrs. Mercy Kyesduhun as its pioneer Provost.
